Sail Sydney backgroundSail Sydney has a long history and association with competitive sailing at the highest level after originally being a test event for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. It has now evolved from being an ‘elite only’ event to one that encompasses and encourages a broad participation from youth to seniors and sailors with disabilities. |
Current status
Part of the Sail Down Under series, which includes Sail Melbourne and Sail Brisbane, the regatta is one of only eight international Grade 1 events in the world (one of two in the southern hemisphere). It is used for Olympic ranking points, attracting top level international and local sailors. As a highlight of the sailing calendar, it is also used as a state and national championship venue for many of the classes. The highest entrant numbers were achieved in 2012 with over 475 boats entered. As it evolves, there is more emphasis on participation for all including family, community, and supporters. |
